Making Music NOW!

We are a Society that challenges. What makes NOW unique is our commitment to creating new improvisatory/compositional work that reflects our highest ideals and pushes our abilities to full capacity. It’s a large part of how connect with our community of artists, of arts organizations, and the broader community in which we live. The tradition of improvisation goes beyond performance. Embodying the human experience, trust and generosity can be brought to participants through its living practice.

2017 is the NOW Society’s 40th year! In addition to our regular programming, the Society looks forward to presenting a four-day interactive installation at the Roundhouse community center in November.

The New Orchestra Workshop (NOW) Society’s mandate reflects our Mission Statement, Making Music NOW!: to provide focus for the creation of original Canadian music by advancing the ideas, values and practices of creative improvisational music through performance, collaboration, engagement, mentoring and publication, through workshops, concerts, festivals and recordings and the presentation of new compositions.

Tracing its roots for almost 40 years, the New Orchestra Workshop (NOW) Society has a rich and varied history of presenting stellar new works in engaging and unique concerts, offering inspiring and informative improvisation workshops, collaborating with world renowned artists, commissioning and premiering new compositions by Canadian and international composers and releasing celebrated recordings. NOW presents improvising ensembles drawn from the city’s premiere mature and emerging artists with instrumentation specific to each project. Deriving from contemporary new music, big band jazz and musique actuelle, NOW ensembles create community by linking improvisers from different disciplines with the shared goal of presenting innovative music. The NOW ensembles have performed in a multitude of venues and formats, from formal concert halls to DIY stages, from showcases to concerts and installations.
